Ashley (girl)

• Over used name but I can see why. The sound of the name,the spelling,well it's just fantastic! It's one of my favorites and it's always has.
• ONLY on a girl! I have always liked this name, from the time I was little. My first Cabbage Patch doll was named Laine Cleo, but I changed it to Ashley Marlene. Don't know where I came up with that combination at the tender age of four, but I still think it's very pretty. To me, Ashley is feminine without being "girlie" and stylish without being "faddish." Well, it isn't a fad anymore.

• This name isn't unusual, sounds pretty, and has a nice nickname (Ash).

• Ashley-mae: for a girl because it is very summery sounding and pretty.
• Ashley Samantha: I think that this name doesn't sound too overwhelming and although its popular (because its a good name) i think that its sounds so pretty! -this is my name :-)

The name Ashley started out as an English surname derived from aesc "ash tree" and leah "wood; clearing; meadow; field." It was quietly used for boys from at least 1880 on (i.e., the character of Ashley Wilkes from Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind). It only began being used for girls in 1917, and was still more popular for boys until the 1960s. It took off for girls in the 1980s and was one of the most popular names throughout the 1980s and 1990s. It is found in multiple spellings, including Ashly, Ashli, Ashlee, Ashleigh, Ashlie etc.
